For decades, dentists have been using injections as part of patient treatment. However, the fear of needles (also known as trypanophobia) is fairly widespread; it impacts up to two out of every three children and as many as 16% of adults, according to statistics compiled by the Cleveland Clinic. At Lee Palmer, DDS, we strive to provide a pain-free injection experience for each of our patients. Keep reading to learn how.
Our guide to pain-free dental injections
- Topical anesthetic: Dr. Palmer applies a powerful topical anesthetic before any injection is administered. This anesthetic has a potent numbing effect. After just a few minutes, the area of skin where the anesthetic is placed should feel minimal pain or discomfort for any ensuing injection.
- Warmed anesthetic: We also offer the option to warm an anesthetic to the same temperature as the human body. This accelerates the numbing process and further reduces the likelihood of any painful sensations during the delivery of an injection.
- Acidity measurements: When working with anesthetic drugs, the least acidic formulations are always the best choice, as the more acidic the drug, the greater the chance it may cause discomfort. We begin with the least acidic anesthetics available, and then use others as needed until the desired numbness is reached.
- State-of-the-art needles: Receiving an injection isn’t what it used to be. New designs and technology have produced needles that are extremely fine. This means less pressure or discomfort at the injection point, making the injection process more comfortable and less stressful, especially for those patients with a fear of needles.
- Injection technique: The administration of injections is a key component of what is taught in dental school. Dr. Lee Palmer has more than three decades of experience in the field of dentistry. He also regularly pursues continuing education, to keep his skills at an extremely high level.
