Dental Crowns

Franklin, TN

Even if a tooth is seriously damaged due to tooth decay or an injury, the team of professionals at Lee Palmer, DDS, can prevent the total loss of the tooth by installing a crown.

What is a crown?

Placing a crown replaces the entire exterior of a tooth. A crown also provides protection for the interior structure of a tooth, known as the pulp, which contains the blood vessels, nerves and tooth root. The additional protection from the crown saves the tooth and also prevents any deterioration of the supporting bone structure, which is an eventual consequence from any lost tooth loss. This deterioration occurs because the tooth root no longer stimulates the supporting jawbone.

We can use a crown to treat any of the following problems:

  • To repair a broken or fractured or tooth
  • To repair a tooth that has sustained major damage from a cavity or tooth decay
  • To replace the exterior of a tooth that is weak, misshapen, short, brittle, or has been damaged by an existing filling

Crowns also can be placed on teeth that are discolored but have not responded to teeth whitening treatments, and we install a crown at the conclusion of any root canal or dental implant procedure.

What to expect from a crown procedure

It will take at least two office visits to complete the installation of a crown. At the first visit, we will administer an anesthetic, after which the dentist will remove any damage or decay from the tooth being treated. The tooth is then thoroughly cleaned, and impressions are taken. A temporary restoration then is placed. At the next appointment, which is usually a week or so later, we will install the permanent crown, which is fabricated by using the impressions as a model.

Throughout the entire process, you can rest assured that you’re receiving the highest level of care. Dr. Palmer is a highly experienced dentist, with decades of knowledge in the field first built during his time of military service.

What types of crowns we use

  • Metal-free crowns are made entirely of dental porcelain. This material is beautiful, durable and resistant to stains. Our staff can color-match your porcelain to look as much as your other teeth as possible, but also will reflect light the same way natural tooth enamel does. They are ideal for front teeth and other visually prominent teeth.
  • PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) crowns have the same durability as the solid metal crowns that have been used for decades in dental work. However, the metallic interior structure is covered with top-quality dental porcelain. Because of the durable metal substructure, these crowns are ideal for teeth that exert more chewing force, such as molars.
